Indigenous Australians Gallery
The Australian Museum cares for over 20,000 objects acquired from many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia. This temporary exhibition showcased highlights and new acquisitions from the collection utilizing existing showcases and plinths. This sustainable approach was also intended to be flexible so that these new elements could be incorporated into the future revamp of the entire gallery space – Bayala Nura exhibition in the First Australians Gallery. Over one hundred images from the museums archives and external sources and three new film sequences from Blackfella and Contact Films were acquired.
Highlights included the Sydney Shield and burra, string figures of Yirrkala, busts of Truganini and Wouraddy, Tasmanian shell necklaces, Crocodile mask and Ghost net turtle from Mer, Didjeridus and yidakis, baskets, boomerangs, bark paintings, MACASSAN style pipes, shields, spears, tools, coolamons, fire sticks, message sticks, toys and jewellery.
