Gapu-Monuk Saltwater

This powerful exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum takes visitors on an immersive journey through the Sea Country of the Yolnu people of northeast Arnhem Land. It celebrates the landmark Blue Mud Bay Legal Case decision recognising Indigenous Sea Rights.

With a wealth of information about their land, language and culture it tells the story of how the Yolnu people fought for their Sea Rights through their sacred bark paintings. It delves deeply into the stories of the many communities who created the bark paintings, revealing a rich understanding of their connections to sea country.

The exhibition is augmented with oral histories, images, film and projections, aerial photography, Mokuy (spirit) carvings and Larrakitj (mortuary poles) and other traditional and contemporary works.
